"A Few Good Men"

"Dave Betts SIR State Golf Committee Chairman"

Men in our age bracket have all heard the old recruiting slogan, "A Few Good Men." We need more good men to become members of the Sons In Retirement and SIR NCGA members through their local SIR branch golf club. Our NCGA membership has dropped from 6,815 in December, 2005 to 5,875 as of February 1, 2006. Some of the drop in numbers involves late NCGA renewals, so please encourage past members to renew.

Each of us know someone who plays golf and is eligible to become a member of SIR. One of the main objectives of SIR is "to greet old friends and meet new ones." Please invite your friends and acquaintances to become SIR members and enjoy the many benefits of the organization. If each of us can recruit "A Few Good Men" our membership will grow back to previous levels.

Eligibility to play golf in state sponsored events requires you be a member of NCGA through your local SIR branch golf club. If you are not currently a member, contact your branch golf chairman or handicap chairman to become a member. NCGA membership through your local SIR branch has many additional benefits. For example, this year's NCGA membership also includes a free, one-year membership in the USGA.

At this writing, we plan to conduct the State Scramble Team Championship (formerly Area Team Championship) at Poppy Ridge (NCGA owned and operated course) in Livermore on August 21st. Final rules and instructions for the qualification rounds will soon be completed and available for all division and area chairmen. Each branch chairman should obtain the rules and instructions from his area chairman. We will also post this information on the golf page of the SIR Website at www.sirinc.org.

At the next State Golf Committee meeting, the committee will discuss an adjustment of some of the division boundaries. We currently have five divisions, ranging in NCGA membership from approximately 250 members to approximately 1,600 members. In order to make a smaller division a more viable operating entity, a boundary adjustment is necessary. Area chairmen who may be affected will be notified immediately of any boundary adjustments.

For tournament results and more detailed information regarding the SIR State Golf Program, please visit the SIR website. Click on "activities" and then on "golf." Retired men reading this article who are interested in joining Sons In Retirement may contact me at my e-mail address.

In the last edition of this publication (Bluebook Edition), the photo of the state champions contained an error in the names of the champions pictured in the photo. The correct names of persons in the back row, left to right, are Dave Betts, John Johnson, Jon Edwards, Don Stacks and Cooper. Jon Edwards was winner of the fifth flight. Pease accept our apologies for the errors.
